Return to The Artists of Myths...
Marc Lafia is an American artist and filmmaker whose work emerges with network culture as it changes our relationship to knowledge, ourselves, our memories, and our bodies, from one of representation to one of presentation, and from contemplation to new modes of embodiment, producing new subjectivities and new ways of going in the world. His work has been exhibited at the Walker Art Center, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Tate Online, ZKM, Centre Pompidou, Anthology Film Archives, International Film Festival Rotterdam, The Minsheng Museum, Shanghai, The 8th Shenzhen Sculpture Biennale, The Whitney in Programmed: Rules, Codes, and Choreographies in Art, 1965–2018 Sep 28, 2018–Apr 14, 2019 and most recently The Guangzhou Triennial, 2023.
Mr. Lafia’s most recent work of
installation and performance Everything is Everything and There is Nothing
Else, composed over 5 years and consisting of 5 long form spoken word
and scored prose poems; has been called a masterpiece through its
delicately balanced chaos and attempt to show the messy beauty of the
“everything” of life.
He has taught at Stanford University, the
San Francisco Art Institute, Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Pratt
Institute and Columbia University. He is the author of Image Photograph
(2015), Everyday Cinema (2017) and The Event of Art (2020) all on
punctum books.
IN Myths of Our Humanity, Mr. Lafia's art illustrates the Afterword.
